Garments Inspired by The Botanical GardensIn conjunction with the fashion styling and photoshoot unit, the students and Mr. Biondolillo accompanied Mrs. Buccino's photography class and professional stylist Andrew Biondolillo to the New York Botanical Gardens. While the photography class spent the first part of the trip taking pictures of the gardens, the fashion students explored the grounds and worked to design two garments inspired by what they saw on the trip. The illustrations can be seen below. Look at the Photography page to see the fashion photo shoots. Fashion of the FutureThe students took their first steps into construction in this project, where they explored fashion history, trend forecasting and repeating themes in fashion, as well as utilitarian clothing. The class studied futuristic themes in fiction, and combined all of their findings to create their interpretation of what fashion will look like in five hundred years. Below are their preliminary sketches and paper dolls, who wear garments constructed from found materials. Class QuiltThe students first learn to sew by hand. For this project, each student creates a quilt patch made up of nine squares measuring 5x5 inches each, The assignment teaches the importance of measuring, connecting, hemming and, of course, how to run a clean stitch, as well as some design and pattern. The end goal usually sees all the patches connected to make a large blanket, made by every member of the class. Characters Re-ImaginedThe first fashion line of the year is also a research project. The students are tasked with interpreting a famous fictional character in five distinct time periods. The project presents a dual challenge in that the designs are not only mandated to be historically accurate, but they must keep the integrity and iconography of the chosen character to create an immediately identifiable likeness. The five designs are then mounted on illustration board, each with a detailed description of the garment, its construction and fabrics (a practice that would become a staple in all future design projects within the class). These illustrations are completed in marker, paint or colored pencil. BagsFor their first assignment on the sewing machine, the students are tasked with simply making a tote-bag, or, as their instructor refers to it, "a pillowcase with straps". Of course, the simple requirements don't stop each student from putting their own spin on it, creating bags in all shapes, sizes and designs. Fashion LinesThroughout the semester, the students are given the weekly task of creating a new fashion line consisting of five designs within a given theme. The designs seen here were toiled over by their makers, who worked tirelessly to develop garments and themes that were exciting and unique. Some students were inspired by film or music, others by life events or big dreams, but all put a little heart and soul into every one of their creations. Fashion DollsAs they approached the construction of the garments for the fashion show, the students created garments for Barbie dolls as a trial. While the design, practical creation and functionality of making clothing for human beings and dolls largely differ, this project gave the students the opportunity to experiment with different fabric and shapes to prepare for the larger scale, while also learning about the industry of fashion dolls. Both the illustration and constructed garments are seen here. Top Five DesignsAfter completing work on all five of their fashion lines, the students made one final collection taking their personal favorite design or the most popular by vote from each previous group. Below is the best of the best, and a sneak peek at the fashion show to come. Fashion ShowThis was a particularly challenging year for the Fashion Design class. While the class stops meeting on a daily basis in January, the students then begin work on their garments for our fashion show, which may take them several months to complete. Although the students all began with gusto, as a result of the pandemic, many were unable to obtain the resources that they needed to make their creations successfully, or the way they'd originally intended. However, through great perseverance, these young ladies managed to construct the most beautiful garments! Normally, these would walk down the runway specially erected in the auditorium to wild applause, but we're bringing them to you in this one-of-a-kind video as the next best thing!
