This year, the SFP Art Department and students had the opportunity to do something truly incredible - an art experience at Walt Disney World. The trip was scouted and planned over the course of year with Custom Tours, Inc., and completely tailored to the needs and desires of this group. The tour included trips to all four major theme parks (Magic Kingdom, Epcot, Hollywood Studios and Animal Kingdom), as well as magical extras in a VIP dinner showing of "Fantasmic!" at Hollywood Studios and a breakfast with classic English characters at 1900 Park Fare at the Grand Floridian, Disney World's flagship resort. However, the most valuable experience of all was the ability to take part in four extensive art workshops on Disney property, taught by working artists for the Walt Disney Company, and the opportunity to take part in the annual Festival of the Arts at Epcot Center. The SFP teachers also supplied the students with their own kit of supplies, courtesy of Blick Arts, and taught various lessons for the students to create work during their time in Florida. This trip was truly the highlight of the year for all who attended, and hopefully the start of a great tradition! SAINT FRANCIS PREP ART DEPARTMENT SENIOR ADVANCED DRAWING AND PAINTING GALLERIES SFP SENIOR ARTIST - ASHLEY ADAMKIEWICZHi, I’m Ashley Adamkiewicz and I am a current senior at St. Francis Prep. I am in the National Arts Honor Society and in several art classes such as Photography, CAD, Advanced Digital Design, Advanced Drawing and Painting, and AP Art History. Art has always been my favorite form of expression because of how many diverse techniques and mediums there are to try out. I would consider my art style to be semi-realistic or illustrative. I enjoy creating artwork that is based on mythological creatures and original characters. I have always enjoyed creating art that is used for story telling. That is why I want to major in illustration. My dream job would be a storyboard illustrator or character designer for Marvel or Pixar. Art has always been my passion ever since I was a toddler. Expressing myself creatively has been and always will be my passion. Creating artwork that has strong meaning, or that can tell a story would be a dream for me as a career. I would like to major in illustration to enhance my love for storytelling through images in a larger scale in a big industry. As an illustration major, I can not only build on my technical and artistic skills, but be able to work in diverse fields. Illustration is such a broad major that allows for me to dabble in different types of mixed media; from comic book illustration to design images for magazines. The possibilities are endless. SFP SENIOR ARTIST - ISABELLA AGATEHi! My name is Isabella and I am currently a senior at St. Francis Prep. I have always been interested in drawing and painting as a kid. The art departments teachers have really shaped me into the artist I am and I have always valued their ideas and teachings. Taking these classes has really allowed me to branch out and try different artistic fields. These classes also challenged my skills as an artist to help me become better. I really appreciate all the talented artists in my classes who have inspired me as well. A result of taking these classes has lead me to my decision of taking fashion design courses in college. I love to explore and learn different fashion styles so that I could create my own. This year I’ve learned that I work really well with my hands. I started to design and create headpieces. I also learned how to sew by hand and with the machine. I hope to use these skills in the future towards my career because I enjoy the creation process. I know that designing and creating artwork will always be a part of my life because I want to share my ideas with the rest of the world someday. I am really grateful for everyone in the art department at Prep. I have made amazing friendships with my classmates and my teachers that I will forever cherish in my heart. SFP SENIOR ARTIST - JOMARIE ALMEUSHey there! My name is Jomarie Ann Almeus. I’m 17 years old, and I’m from Queens Village, New York. I’m a first-generation Haitian-Cuban student. I come from a family full of musicians, artists, and creative writers. My grandfather was a painter. He painted portraits of his wife all the time! My father is a musician and my mother is a singer; however, I don’t have any musical talent. Instead,My love for art transcends all bounds. I started drawing seriously when I was seven years old. I actually started trying digitally using Photoshop on my dad’s computer! I would watch multiple cartoons and animes and try to recreate the styles of them, like Avatar: The Last Airbender. That was my way of learning how to draw. Till this day, I still watch TV shows and use them as references for my art works. Digital art is my passion, but I’m starting to be fond of traditional art as well. I find charcoal to be one of my most favorite mediums to use right next to markers. My goal is to be the most versatile and confident artist I can be. SFP SENIOR ARTIST - JOSHUA BALINA"Hi, my name is Josh. I love to focus on my art. I like to show art work that I am proud of. I know that my art may make an impact on someone else. I am proud to be who I am, and what I believe in. One of my biggest motivations in life is to make my family proud. I say what I believe in, in my art. " - Josh Balina SFP SENIOR ARTIST - WILLIAM BARRY "I want to pursue a career in animation. I find movies entertaining and it’s my goal in life to bring entertainment to the masses. I thoroughly enjoy all kinds of art, however. I’m into drawing, painting, computer arts such as modeling, sculpture, and obviously film, to name a few. I’m also a member of the Alvernian Drama Society. Acting is another interest of mine. In a few years, look for my name in the credits of a film." - William Barry SFP SENIOR ARTIST - KAYLA CONELLIOne of the things I loved best about Prep was the art department. All of the teachers in the art department push you to do your best, and they always want you to be the best artist you can be. There are such a wide variety of art classes to take, and I remember looking through the art booklet as an eighth grader and looking forward to the classes to choose as a junior and senior. During my freshman and sophomore years I was in the advanced honors class, and once I got to be a junior I took Drawing From Life, Computer Graphics, CAD, and Advanced Drawing and Painting. Now I’m taking Architecture, the second part of Advanced Drawing and Painting, and AP Art History. Each class helped me grow as an artist, and expand my horizons with the amount of different types of art that are focused on. I did everything from digital art, to architecture, to life drawing, and each time using a lot of different mediums to express my work. SFP SENIOR ARTIST - KEYING LAI / SHERRY"When I came to America , new environment, I felt very anxious and upset. One day, things changed. I participated in an art competition and won the championship. All the students came to congratulate me. After that, the students started to talk to me. Winning the art competition , made me fall in love with art. Art is the mother of language; it speaks to all people and helps to release pressure from my life." - Keying Lai SFP SENIOR ARTIST - TARYN LIELLOMy name is Taryn Liello, and I am a senior at St. Francis Prep. I am an art student, I’m taking drawing, painting, ceramics, and advanced drawing and painting this year. I also enjoy playing guitar, learning languages, traveling, photography, playing video games, and I love animals. Art has helped me evolve as a student and as a person. I have two frogs, Napoleon and Octavian. They are so cute and they inspire me to draw a photo of a frog, which will be my submission into the scholastic art competition. Inspiration developed from one of the other things I love which allowed me to create a piece that I was passionate and excited about doing. SFP SENIOR ARTIST - ANTONIA LUCANIAI first attended St Francis prep I was enrolled in the generic studio in art class, my art teacher asked me why I wasn’t in honors which confused me. I really didn’t think I drew anything better than anyone else but why would I say no to going into honors. From that day forward if had a huge work load for my art classes. I say classes because between junior and senior year I’ve been enrolled in 8 art classes including, advanced drawing and painting and AP art history. I feel like it was fate that I would play guitar. My guitar teacher ended up giving me a red acoustic guitar. For a few years I used to just strum it while it was out of tune, no cords either because I didn’t know what a “chord” was. I know it was really nice of the guitar man to give me my first guitar and I which I still owned that cherry wood guitar but I ended up leaning/sitting on it and snapped it in half. I never played one chord on that guitar but I still feel that it was a factor that effected my future of buying a new Yamaha acoustic guitar and taking lessons freshman year of high school. Junior year my friends told me that I should try out for honors jazz band although I’ve never taken a full year music class in st Francis prep. It took a lot of courage but I tried out and ended up making it in, which surprised me because i was beet red throughout the whole thing and messed up a few chords. Now I spend a majority of my time in class, guitar lessons, and practicing at home. This taught me to try even though I don’t believe that I’m good enough because I might be in the end. This also taught me time management, patience, precision and discipline. SFP SENIOR ARTIST - VICTORIA RESHETNIKOVI’ve never been able to disconnect this creative facet from myself. I love everything about creating art. I experiment with subject matter, incorporate surrealism into my work, practice mark making and layering, and do everything I can to improve the way I present my ideas. Illustration has always intrigued me, and I’ve naturally gravitated towards harsh lines and boldness in my work. The importance of conveying ideas and messages through art has always intrigued, me, and I love working to create visual narratives and stories that can be deciphered in my projects. I also find goats to be a big subject in my work. Their pastoral, dumbfounding quality helps me reach outside the urban environment I’ve been raised in and enter a more peaceful, domestic part of myself. Compounded with art, I’m also very passionate about adolescent education, psychology, and social work. I’ve always been teaching and observing others. Watching young kids grow and shape their character is so interesting to me, and helping them do this through therapy and education is even more exciting. I’m also passionate about social work and have felt myself gravitate towards issues of education reform in New York City. I love tutoring, and the brilliance of helping a child understand larger concepts is a very rewarding practice. In the future, I look to combine my two fields of interest to pursue art therapy. I am ready as a student and a community leader to make art a cooperative platform, and through this cooperation, rehabilitative. Joy is preserved through the arts, and, as a teacher, I find passion in acting as a steward to maintain and preserve the wonder and creativity of young minds. SFP SENIOR ARTIST - SHULIN SONG" Greetings! I am Shulin, an at student at SFP!, I have since associated fashion design as an art style that voices self-expression. I dream about having my voices heard through my own designs. After I finally got a sewing machine, I became tremendously devoted to creating patterns. When I sewed a doll garment, the tiny pieces of fabric were too small to pass through the machine, so I learned to pin them onto tissue paper. As I acquire more techniques, however, the small scale for doll clothes felt limited. I began sketching, pattern cutting, and sewing dresses for humans. Interestingly, I realized that a fashion design project would entail the same design inspiration process, research work, and visualization ability that I had conducted hundreds of times designing doll outfits. I had a new revelation- my years of practice on dolls have prepared me to fashion design." - Shulin Song SFP SENIOR ARTIST -XUANCHEN ZHU - KYLEHi! My name is Xuanchen Zhu, and I am a senior student here at St. Francis Prep. I have been involved with different varieties of art classes since my freshman year at prep. Such as two-dimensional design, drawing from life, computer graphics and also AP art history. I am also involved in the National Art Honor Society as a member since junior year. I really appreciate all of the experiences and skills I learned from our art department in Prep. Our amazing faculties and teachers are all so inspiring and really helped me to become a better artist. Art plays such an important role in my life that I feel like I can’t live with it. I also want to develop my art abilities in terms of skills and concepts when I get to college. Illustration is my biggest passion in terms of arts and I would very much like to learn more about illustration design in the future. Digital Pointillist LandscapesAfter studying the history of the pointillism medium and the famous artists who pioneered it, the students made their own landscape paintings in the technique. Unlike Georges Seurat, Paul Signac and Maximillien Luce, who used paint on canvas, the students in Mr. Biondolillo's class made their paintings digitally, on an iPad app called Paper by 53. Some students painted places that they knew, some painted landscapes from a movie, and others created a scene all their own, each one made by grouping hundreds of small, colorful dots.. Grid PortraitsWhat began with a lesson on caricatures folded into learning about some of the great portrait artists in history. The students surveyed the different techniques and styles of artists like Frida Khalo, Leonardo Da Vinci and Marc Chagall before making their own portrait drawings in a technique made famous by Chuck Close. The students divided up a sheet of paper into a grid, drew the same grid over a photograph and copied the contents of each box one at at time. Pop Art Villain PaintingsAround Halloween, Mr. Biondolillo taught the class about pop art, and the artists that made it famous. After going over popular series like "Bunk!" and artists like Andy Warhol, Mr. Biondolillo challenged the students to choose their favorite fictional villain. They would then paint this villain on canvas in the style of Andy Warhol's prints. They had to paint the character traditionally, in grayscale, using complimentary colors to the original, and one free choice. These are acrylic on canvas panel. Angel IllustrationsJust before Christmas, Mr. Biondolillo talked about angels, and their depictions in art history. The students were given a brief assignment to depict an angel in any style of their choosing. Some kids chose to paint, others to draw. Some leaned towards a more realistic style, others chose something more abstract. Despite the medium and the style, the result is still a beautiful portrayal of a heavenly figure. Landscape PaintingsWhile we started off the year painting landscapes digitally and using the stippling technique, one of the most popular projects of the year is painting landscapes in the traditional format. The class worked together step by step with Mr. Biondolillo on a single landscape before completing the ones shown here on their own. Acrylic on canvas. Art Nouveau TilesThis project is so popular that it is taught to all freshmen at St. Francis Prep. After learning the history of the art nouveau movement, the students are tasked with creating paintings on tiles the go with the themes and styles of that period. Some students chose to use all four tiles to create one image, some chose to spread two images over two tiles, and others chose to paint a different image on each one. Acrylic on ceramic tiles. Carnival of Venice MasksThis is normally the first project in class to do with sculpting. After learning about the way in which the preparation for Lent is celebrated in Venice and New Orleans, and the history of masks in theater and tradition, the students design their own masks. These illustrations were meant to be sculpted in Rigid Wrap over face forms, and painted with acrylic paint before being decorated with various additions. However, due to the coronavirus lockdown, the masks were never created. These illustrations are a hauntingly beautiful nod to the masks that never were. Superhero Character DesignAfter making the switch to distance learning, Mr. Biondolillo introduced the class to face and figure drawing, which led into their next assignment - character design. The students were tasked with imagining themselves as superheroes (or supervillains), and creating a costume and logo that symbolized the character. This work shows itself first in the concept art, and then in the turnaround views of the character. These were done with marker, paint, colored pencil or digitally. Comic Book CoversAs a natural followup to the superhero character design, it was time to place those characters in a world of their own. Students learned about the components of a comic book cover, including a dynamic title and a publishing box featuring the character's unique logo. Many students chose to add story elements to their covers, while other let the characters speak for themselves. These were done with marker, colored pencil, paint or digitally. Web Page Design is a one semester course for juniors and seniors. Students learn about design, history, and creation of web pages from the ground up. This includes aesthetic and user interface design, as well as user experience, funcitonality, and basic coding. The course does not require previous coding or web design experience, and students get a foundation in this course. Artist WebsiteFor students' first project, they created an artist portfolio website showcasing their own artwork. This was done with the Weebly editor, and could serve as an example to submit for college portfolio submissions. Type Pairing
App DesignStudents used the iPad app Adobe Comp to lay out their app ideas, complete with user interface studies, properly paired fonts, icon placement and user experience studies, and color and images finally added! Coding ChallengesCustom Coding - Tumblr Fan PageVideo Game Design is a one year course for juniors and seniors. Beginning with a brief history of gaming from board games to present computer software and mobile applications, students analyze and study digital games from an academic perspective. Through hands-on tutorials, guided lessons, and project-based learning, students learn to construct basic 2D and 3D digital games. Students learn how to create games using Unity, Unreal Engine 4, and computer programming, and to publish their games for web, Mac, PC, and Android. The students study how to guide a game from its conception, to design, through production and testing. Projects are compiled into a digital portfolio for a grade, and should be considered for potential use in college admissions processes. Text-Based, 2D, and 3D Game CreationTabletop GamesCharacter DesignPROPORTION COLLAGESTo introduce Two-Dimensional Design to the students, they were taught the Principles of Design. These are the essential rules to create a visually strong and dynamic composition. One of the first few Principles they learned were Proportion, Scale and the use of the Golden Rule. These allowed the student to learn how to work with visual space, distribution of images on the picture plane as well as play around with exaggeration of size. These examples may appear simple but they take into consideration great planning to develop an interesting and eye-catching composition. BALANCE DESIGNSIn the beginning of the year, students learned the Principles of Design. These “laws” of art marking allow an artist to create a piece of work that is visually striking and interesting to look at. These pieces of art are examples of the Principle of Balance. The students chose Symmetrical, Asymmetrical, Radial, Random, Chrystographic or Formal Balance to create a basic design through the use of lines and shapes. Then, the students created value studies to determine how a limited palette of two to three colors, can create a composition which is strong and visually interesting. ORGANIC ABSTRACTIONAfter the Principles of Design, students learned how to develop a strong composition through the use of a dynamic Rhythm and Emphasis. Primarily, the students work is made up of flat two dimensional designs and do not show completely realistic representations. For this project, each student was asked to find a unique organic object, to study its shape and structure inside and out and then take all this information to create a design. After daily assignments to help them create their strongest composition with the best rhythm and emphasis, students painted them basic black and white to allow the contrast to emphasize the design. GEOMETRIC ABSTRACTIONAfter our Organic Abstraction Designs, students were taught the use of a Ruler, T-Square and Triangle. Through these tools, they focused on understanding the use of 30, 60, 90 and 180 degree angles. Instead of more natural lines, this project was made only of geometric, man-made angles as listed above. Just as the previous project, they were asked to create a strong rhythm and emphasis to create a dynamic compositional design. As for the colors, this project used black, white & now grey color which they created to allow for more complexity and diversity within the design. The students also utilized Negative Design Area, (The area around the design), along with the Positive Design Area, (The actual design.), to develop a two dimensional design which utilized the Principles of Design. PARALINE PERSPECTIVEFor the third project, students applied the rules of working with angles, (30, 60, 90 and 180 degrees), from the previous Geometric Abstraction and applied them to this first attempt to linear perspective. This form of perspective uses parallel lines to create an illusion this flat two dimensional designs may have length, width and now depth. In this project, each form created worked with a different angle. As always, a strong rhythm and emphasis was created to direct the viewer’s attention. The grey, white and black color scheme was utilized once again. Instead of placing color anywhere, they were asked to imagine a light source for each form to create a stylized highlight, mid-tone and shadow. ONE POINT PERSPECTIVEBuilding on from Paraline Perspective, students learned One Point Perspective. The difference between the two perspectives is one uses parallel lines while the other has a particular focal in one direction. Students utilized the use of a Horizon Line, Vanishing Point and Orthogonal Lines to create more realistic forms of linear perspective. After a composition of a strong rhythm and emphasis was creating, students had to use spray paint to create the values. This tricky process of spraying various values, tones and textures onto paper can be unpredictable but the outcomes create a sense of changing values and depth to the design which we did not see before. These spray painted areas were traced, cut out and glued onto the Illustration board rather than painted like in previous projects. ** Artists in the second semester had to create this project at home through Distant Learning. Although a couple were able to complete the project in the original method, some had supply restrictions, you will notice pieces painted or BW colored pencils. TWO POINT PERSPECTIVEFor the final project, students learned Two Point perspective to create a design using a strong rhythm and emphasis. The major difference between the two perspectives is either creating the perspective of a shape facing the front of it or from its corner. Another major change from previous projects is the use of color. Students were introduced to warm, cool and contrasting colors to create a sense of transitioning value through the use of colored pencils. Wire Self-Portraits Found-Object Animals Final Free-Choice Projects 2019-20 Many people aspire to learn how to paint, but few know where to begin. Painting touches the creative side of our personalities. Students have tangible expressions of their effort and imagination. The purpose of the course is to promote sensitivity to color interaction, advance technical and compositional skills, and provide a basis for creative growth and expression. This painting course is based on aesthetics, art history and the Elements of art and Principles of design. Our class answers questions like, where do I start? In this class we explore the basics of color, paint types, acrylic mediums, brushes, knives and accessories, Students learn how to set up a palette. They discover the history and basics of acrylic paint. It is my hope that through hard work and exploration students will find their own individual styles. Think of each project as a potential portfolio piece. PAINTING WITH GREY SCALEPAINTING CLASS - MAKING PAINT |
